The Media Institute of Southern Africa Lesotho Chapter (MISA Lesotho) has begun a review of various laws of Lesotho as part of its Media Legal Reforms Project supported by the Open Society Initiative on Southern Africa (OSISA).
The review is done by a local consultant Advocate Nthabiseng Nkhahle and it is expected to inform repeal of various pieces of legislation and also to facilitate development of media friendly laws in Lesotho.
The exercise involves study of about fourteen (14) pieces of legislation and several relevant reports as well as one to one interviews with stake holders in the development of the media Lesotho who include leaders of the media, civil society organisations, higher learning institutions and the Government of Lesotho officials.
Some laws that are expected to be studied include the Constitution of Lesotho Official Secrecy Act, Internal Security Act and Lesotho Communications Act.
The project is geared towards contribution to the reform Media and Information as recommended by the Southern Africa Development Cooperation (SADC) in a bid to professionalise the media in order free the country from political instability.
