Partnering with Code for Africa (CfA), MISA Lesotho Unveils Data-Driven Fact-Checking Initiative to Empower Citizens and Safeguard Democracy
In an era where misinformation and disinformation threaten democratic discourse and public trust, MISA Lesotho has taken a bold step forward with the establishment of its CheckDesk, a cutting-edge fact-checking initiative launched in partnership with Code for Africa (CfA), the continent’s largest civic technology federation.
For years now, Lesotho has seen an explosion of misleading content in unmoderated Facebook groups and messaging apps. From false health advisories to sensationalized political rumors, “rumor mills” have eroded public confidence and, in some cases, endangered lives. CheckDesk responds to this crisis by offering a centralized hub where data-driven fact-checks are rigorously researched and transparently published.
The Check Desk, accessible via WhatsApp, SMS, and MISA Lesotho email, aims to debunk false claims on critical issues such as public health, climate, gender rights and access, gender identity issues and governance. This launch comes as Lesotho grapples with the lingering impacts of viral falsehoods, including 2023’s dangerous COVID-19 “herbal cure” rumors, which the Africa CDC later linked to delayed vaccinations and preventable deaths.
MISA Lesotho CheckDesk project lead, Nicole Tau emphasized the urgency of the initiative:
“We are now in the digital age where information isn’t just at our fingertips, but it is also easy to drown in its noise and volume. It has become very important to have the navigational skills to sift through the misinformation that isn’t just a nuisance, but erodes trust, endangers lives, and undermines democracy. The Check Desk will empower Basotho with truth in an age where lies spread faster than facts. Whether it’s a viral WhatsApp message about climate change or gender issues, we’re here to verify it.”
The desk operates with support from CfA’s African Fact-Checking Alliance (AFCA) and PesaCheck, Africa’s largest fact-checking coalition. Through this partnership, MISA Lesotho’s team of four full-time fact-checkers leverages advanced tools like digital forensics and data analysis to investigate claims. CfA also provides ongoing training and access to secure whistleblower platforms like AfriLEAKS, ensuring the desk meets global verification standards.
Citizens and newsrooms can submit suspicious claims via a secure WhatsApp line or email. Each tip is evaluated for public impact and verifiability. Checkers then consult primary documents, interview subject-matter experts, and analyze open data sources. Findings are published with clear “True,” “False,” or “Mixed” ratings alongside concise explanations of the evidence and methodology.
By exposing falsehoods and spotlighting verified information, MISA Lesotho seeks to reduce polarization, bolster democratic accountability, and protect vulnerable populations.
